About the Workshop

Do you need support initiating or completing an artist project? Do you have all the elements of an artwork in place, but need guidance? Do you want a working vacation that gives you permission to focus entirely on your work? Are you a practicing, mid-career artist? Then The Artists School is for you! And me.

Join curator and artist Meg Rotzel at the Maine Creative Residency for a week of engaged studio visits, structured work time, and knowledgeable coaching with a cohort of five other motivated artists. Meg has worked with artists, galleries, and institutions for over two decades to realize projects, exhibitions, and publications while inspiring new directions in their practice. Her approach is based in knowledgeable and careful observation, open and playful conversation with the intent of scaffolding achievable next steps for visual artists.

Also offered: mini therapeutic dance parties, good meals, laughs, a very sweet pup and a generous wraparound porch for cool drinks and friendly chats.

You’ll stay in a beautiful 1854 Greek Revival home hosted by award-winning, fine metal worker Erica Moody. The workshop takes place in the Schoolhouse studios just across the road, now under renovation. Breakfast and dinner are provided by local food cooked up by Day Boat Cafe. Located on Friendship Street within a vibrant village sited on the water, participants can find small farms, restaurants, and a very real opportunity for a boat ride

Prerequisites: Artists will arrive with a project that is at the beginning or final stages. Unlike an artist residency where time and studio space is the objective, the workshop provides critical feedback and direction in concert with the artist's needs and goals. Each participant will receive a 40 minute remote pre-discussion to prepare a “kit” for the week that may include identifying key works, texts, inspiration, and goals.
